How to Eliminate Stress by Focusing More on Discipline
Known as the silent killer, stress has the unique distinction of being a leading cause of health problems for millions of people from around the world. Everything from heart problems, diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal disorders, depression and so many other health related issues can be linked to stress.
Here’s a fascinating thing about stress, many underlying health issues can be altered simply by tackling stress and reducing it. Of course, reducing stress may not be as easy as some people think. For one thing, many people who constantly struggle with stress do not realize the consequences. Therefore, they lack a real plan and the steps needed to deal with it.
In reality, they simply lack a self help alternative such as discipline. As a powerful human trait, discipline can be crucial for those individuals who seek a life filled with happiness, total health and something truly rewarding. Here’s a few areas to look at where discipline can be applied in your everyday life and some easy steps and actions that can help reduce stress and make a significant impact on your overall health, both mentally and physically.
Think of what you eat
Sounds simple, but most people will end up getting this wrong. And to top it off, this is where a lot of health issues begin. The truth is, most people do not care or simply do not give any thought as to what they eat. They simply want foods that taste good, that’s all.
Unfortunately, you need to be a little smarter than this. This is where discipline kicks in, as it will help you choose and eat foods that are more nutritious for you and fuel your body better. Instead of foods that focus entirely on pleasure. That doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy certain treats once in a while, it simply means focusing on more foods that actually provide the proper nutrition and fuel your body needs.
Let’s assume that you eat 3 regular meals per day, which adds up to 21 meals per week. If you choose to eat the right foods for at least 15 of those meals, it’s still on a positive direction. In fact, it’s around 70 percent and no matter what, your overall health will still benefit from the changes.
The basic problem that exists with most people is simply making poor food choices for all their meals. Think about it for a moment. Most people will put emphasis on foods that only make them feel good.
One way to help with meal choices is by planning at least seven days in advance. If you have to think daily of what you’re going to eat, that’s where problems start to settle in. And don’t forget, you can always plan on having a cheat day or cheat meals where you eat something more enjoyable. The primary thing is to focus on the majority of your meals. Once you have an acceptable plan for most of your meals, simply keep to it. And, even though your mind may suggest something else, keep to your plan. There’s no doubt that during this transition you’ll come across challenges. Just keep in mind, you’re doing something new and trying to break old habits while incorporating new ones. This is where discipline starts to work as it will help in keeping you focused on what’s important in your life.
Your life in general
Believe it or not, performing simple tasks around your home such as cleaning up after yourself can do a lot in helping to reduce stress levels for you. Things such as making your bed once you wake up or even washing the dishes after you finish eating. Doing your laundry by following a schedule is another stress reducer and helps in keeping your home clean and tidy.
Don’t forget the kids. Make sure children understand certain responsibilities by making a schedule for them to follow as well. This helps with discipline so there are no questions about what needs to be taken care of.
The key is to maintain some type of order within in your life, which goes a long way in reducing stress. Many parents build up high levels of stress simply because chores around the house do not get done. Maintaining order through a simple schedule of tasks will let your children know what they are responsible in doing without you having to constantly hound them. Keep in mind, every little thing adds up when trying to reduce stress.
A perfect example
Do your kids often finish eating and simply leave their plates in the sink? Do you do this as well? Many people end up doing this after eating a meal. It’s not something new. It is however a sign of temporary comfort, but more importantly, it’s a sign of procrastination. The problem is that over time, especially a few days, those dishes can pile up and the task of washing them often produces stress.
Little tasks can do a lot to reduce stress
The best idea is simple to avoid as many hassles as possible. Complete as many of the little tasks as possible and you’ll eventually end up avoiding a lot of hassles in your life. Discipline is the key.
Another key objective is to simplify as much of your life as you can. Make a plan, a list and a schedule for most of the tasks and the things you want to accomplish. This can be your diet, the time you sleep, the time you wake up or anything else you need help with. Follow your plan and eventually you’ll discover less stress in your life. If you are one of those of individuals who is constantly rushing to get to work, wake up earlier and get things done. If your clothes start to fell a little tight, plan a diet choosing more nutritious meals to help shed excess weight. Instead of sitting down and watching TV or surfing the web after eating, go for a walk. This will not only help in reducing weight, but it will also help in reducing overall stress.
Discipline is a key element in helping to reduce all the little challenges to often get you down and usually wear you out. Adding discipline to your life may seem hard in the beginning, especially as you incorporate order and routines. Eventually, you’ll get the hang of it though.
